"Be Greater."
Those are the two words that come to mind when people hear that Long Island's own "Relley Rozay" will be spinning at the party they're planning to attend. Born and raised in Central Islip, the standout college football star-turned musician has increasingly succeeded in making his mark within hip-hop, which is something his fans appreciate and are looking to receive more of.
This is why we're choosing to start this new "1 on 1" series with Relley Rozay, where he will tell us about how music became an interest and what his plans are moving forward.
Mike: When did you take an interest in music; when did you start making mixes of your own?
Relle: I've always been into music since I grew up in a family that has been into the art of music before i was even a thought of. Since like middle school, if an old school hip hop, r&b, soul, or whatever came on the radio... my mom would quiz me by asking who it was. So with that, my knowledge of music just got better. I'm constantly having music conversations with my family as well.
Mike: Did you start out always wanting to be a DJ or did you want to rap/sing at first?
Relle: I started actually djing towards the end of my prep school year. I would be cooped up in my dorm room so I figured I might as well be productive and start djing and i fell in love with it ever since.
Mike: Tell us how you came up with the moniker Relley Rozay.
Relle: Honestly, I dont even remember. I just know that everyone calls me Relle and Relley so I figured I'd find another name to add to it.
Mike: Who would you say are your biggest inspirations in Hip-Hop: one celebrity and one non-celebrity?
Relle: My biggest celebrity inspiration in the Hip-Hop industry is Pro Era. I've seen them progress since they were 16 years old. My biggest non celebrity inspiration is my family for sure. They continue to pass down knowledge of the hip hop game which I truly am grateful for.
Mike: Name 3 of the biggest venues or events you’ve performed at.
Relle: The 3 biggest events thus far have been Princeton Spring Lawn Parties where I opened up for K Camp, Hit Em With The Beats After Party, and a summer time bash during Summer '15.
Mike: Describe the feeling of seeing people, whether at parties or on Soundcloud, responding to your mixes in such a positive fashion.
Relle: The feeling is unbelievably fulfilling. As a DJ, your job is to make sure people are having a great time. People don’t realize how much power a DJ has. You move the crowd and the crowd feeds off your energy ya know?
Mike: Definitely hear you and agree on that. What’s next for Relley Rozay on a musical and a professional scale? Are there any plans to start producing more beats?
Relle: In the future, i plan on DJing out in San Diego a few times. I also want to start touring once i graduate this upcoming spring. I plan on gettin back into producing. My bro Delah started teaching me a while ago but i havent had time to make any beats this summer since I've been in California this summer. Additionally, y radio show is coming up back up in the fall. Its on 103.3 fm WPRB. Its played throughout NJ, Philly, & Delaware. But can also be streamed on wprb.com. The show is called G.O.A.T. Life* radio. The time is TBD as of right now but I'm looking forward to being on the air again.
Mike: What's the likelihood of a Mike Edwards Track produced by Dj Relley Rozay in the future?!?!
Relle: Likelihood? Nah it WILL happen haha. Once I come back to the east coast, I’m about to produce a shit ton in my dorm room.
Mike: Rapid Fire: Give me your top 3 DJs in the game right now, followed by 3 of your favorite producers.
Relle: My top 3 DJs in the game right now are DJ Relley Rozay, Statik Selektah, and DJ Premier. My 3 favorite producers in the game right now are my brother Delah from G.O.A.T. Life*. He really has the power of moving you through his sound. Kirk Knight, I watched him online playing all of his beats at the Boiler Room and it was just so dope. And Knx (Knxwledge), that dude finds a way to put chill beats behind lyrics you would never think is possible.
